Sleep in Adolescents with Intellectual or Developmental Disability

Description: This study aims to better understand sleep in adolescents and young adults who have been diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability.

Looking for: Rural adolescents and young adults between the ages of 13-25 years who 1) have been diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability and 2) live at least 50 miles outside of Lexington, KY. Examples of a diagnosed intellectual and developmental disability include but are not limited to Angelman’s Syndrome, Fragile X, and Autism.

How long: Participation in this study is only for one day and one full night of sleep. It will occur in the comfort of your own home as we will mail all needed materials to you free of charge. No travel necessary.

What we would ask you to do: We would ask you or your child who has been diagnosed with an IDD to meet and speak with research staff over the phone or Zoom (your preference), complete surveys about your sleep, mood, and thoughts, wear a headband and watch that will track your sleep for 1 night, and to return all study materials to us with provided materials at no cost to you.

How would you be compensated:  You will be compensated $50 for your time and completion of the tasks described above.

How will you receive your study materials and compensation: You will receive one package in the mail containing all materials along with a return shipment label that will allow you to send the items back to us for free. You would receive your compensation via check from the University of Kentucky to the address you provide research staff.

Eligible individuals should:

  • Be between the ages of 13-25 years old
  • Have been diagnosed by a medical professional with an intellectual or developmental disability
  • Have any change to medications in the past 6 months
  • Do not take medications that affect your sleep
  • Live 50 miles outside of Lexington KY.
